You did open a can of worms but I'm far too tired to think at the moment. I'll put my opinion in later...

If I believed in the God this refers to it would make more sense to me. Being that I don't, I am mystified at why someone would want to concern themselves with "WHY? WHY? WHY?" What is is. By wondering why something terrible happens the terrible-ness is expanded and continued. When something is accepted and taken as a lesson (which, if you're looking for answers, the lesson can be a reason), it becomes positive and the negativity is dispelled. There really shouldn't be any reasons for why anything is "allowed." But I suppose that's why people turn to religion, is to find answers. Ok, I really don't have much to say on this. (Believe me, I know many of you are thinking *aahhhhhhhh* she is done with her pontificating for the night) ;-)

Interesting!!

Before I start out on my spread, here is a small bit about my foundation, just for kicks:

Raised in a Buddhist family, attended Catholic school and then a Christian college. So one could imagine the amount of different religions I have experienced, but I have never claimed one as the "one". Rather, more as teachings and with eastern philosophies, a way of living.

In regards to asking "why why and why" as Liquidelectronica points out, I do agree that for some, turning to "God" for acceptance of such negative results (suffering, pain, anguish) becomes a sense of comfort. Lessons learned, especially from negative experiences would feel a less inflicting if I were able to dispel such feelings by saying that I believed in a "God" that allowed such suffering. But for me, any lesson learned, be it from a positive experience or a disastrous and painful one I usually take in stride. ..........not because I believe in such an entity, but because I made the decision wholly on my own and am ready for whatever the consequences might be.

Ok, now the worms are out all over ;o)

Pretty solid, Chuck. I think of suffering as something that it is possible, even in this life, to get past, once and for all.
In other words, I believe in complete happiness as a realistic goal.
Of course, I am not to this point yet, and most people it seems, die before they get there, but I think we have to keep doing it over, like in Groundhog Day, til we get it right, in an actual Life.
A cool rabbi once said that we are God's conscience.
I agree with this.
Yes, God is the force of Love in the universe.
God IS the universe.
But it is up to each of us to direct and personify this force in our individual lives.
But everything you said about suffering is true, and suffering can be used to END suffering.

Sadly, the problem is with the inequity of suffering. It's not really a matter of why God allows suffering in the world, but why certain people suffer and others don't. Especially suffering of the innocent, like infant mortality in underdeveloped countries.
