What about boredom
|
Ever feel nothing's there in life. Boredom is an odd emotion, time seems to stand still. I feel guilty about wasitng my life away for no good reason. At the same time boredom has a twin called apathy--sorta like I dont care. Ojbects at rest tend to stay there

in a way isn't boredom the opposite of apathy? at least when you're bored you are caring that you are bored and you're wanting not to be bored although the caring usually takes up all the time necessary to make a sincere attempt at un-boring yourself

boredom is quite peculiar.
and I would say boredom and apathy are not so different as they might seem.
woah, this is trippin me out... heheh.
it seems like boredom is more a product of others expectations that we have been taught from an early age. If we had been taught that it was ok to sit around and do nothing (which really, you're never sitting around and doing *nothing*) then it wouldn't be a problem. In fact, it isn't a problem! It's our minds that make it a problem: they blab all these ideas at us about what we *should* be doing, when really all we want to do is sit around and listen to our thoughts or watch the sun on the grass.
And that's awesome. In many cultures of the world (particularly Eastern) it is highly spiritual and respected to sit around listening to your thoughts (and then let go of them) or to watch the sun on grass or cherry blossoms. I think we'd all be a lot happier if we could stop telling ourselves that being "bored" is so terrible and just acknowledge it as something everyone likes to be sometimes. some people more often than others. :-D

That's an interesting point. I think it's part of American/Western culture for people to feel like they always need to be busy. A lot fo times during the summer I'd just lay (or is it lie? damn English...) on my bed and stare at the ceiling, just thinking about things. My brother would come in and say "what the fuck are you doing?" and I'd tell him tell him. He didn't understand why I'd want to just sit and think and let my mind drift where it wanted to.
Of course, thinking too much can be a bad thing. When you think too much of things that you regret doing, start having doubts about everything. Thinking is good, as long as you try to keep it positive.

People only get "bored" because they think that there's something better that they could be doing to pass the time. I think it has everything to do with our fast-paced lifestyle, people have a hard time sitting at 0 km/h because they have nothing distracting them from themselves.

its kind of weird to call boredom an emotion, you could call it the tension that occurs out of lack of emotion, kind of like a crack addict goes through withdrawls! another thing to think about is that boredom is kind of taken from context, whats boring to someone can be a complete thrill to someone else! take playing chess with chewbacca, boring( and scary) to c-3-po, i'd have a hoot.
p.s. i'm not a star wars nerd thats just the first thing that came to my head!

who can afford to be bored? granted, we need leisure time too, but without pushing ourself to be industrious part of the time we would indeed become stagnant; physically and mentally. "boredom" usually sneaks in when something needs doing that i dont "want" to do. but if i wait long enough the miserable feeling of "apathy" will get me up and moving.
