In my religion of choice, Unitarian Universalism, we adhere to the tenet that we are to "affirm the inherent worth, and dignity of all humans". It is a beautiful way to live your life, but in this world, in this country, namely, in which goodness is exterminated and wickedness rewarded, how can I live up to that standard put forth by the forebears of our faith. I can I in good conscionce, look upon men like George W. Bush and the far more terrifying "brains behind the figurehead", the members of our unfortunate commander-in-chief's cabinet. Wicked men whom at one point sat on the executive boards of the companies now charged with rebuilding the country the U.S. had no right to devastate. Under the propaganda, the images of an evil dictator, and the facade of divine guidance, we bomb a country into submission, and then set about the task of rebuilding in our image. Only problem is, we don't know how to do it, so we ask for help from other nations who told us not to attack. And what do they do? Our leaders ask for their aid but assert that they must remain suboordinates under U.S. efforts. Then the Bush administration pours billions of dollars into the companies that bought him his election in the first place. Now if you ask me, that is crooked! That is utter depravity, and we have people like Ann Coulter telling me that since I am a liberal and do not follow my president blindly, that I am not patriotic. Her work is at the top of the sales charts. And then I have to ask Ann Coulter: Is not this country founded on the principle that I have the right to disagree with those in power. Is it unpatriotic to exercise the very right to voice this disapproval, a right that our forebears died, and took lives to grant us? And who says patriotism in America is a good thing? In the country of racism, sexism, gender oppression, class oppression, capitalism, greed, gluttony, and murder, how can I be proud? Even our very rights are being systematically terminated under the Patriot Act. In the movie, "Bowling for Columbine", Michael Moore portrays the struggles of a poor single mother, working seventy hours a week to support her child. In the end she is evicted, and her son goes on to shoot another student in my home state of Michigan. Her son is six years old. Still, men like George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Dick Chenney sit on thrones that are borne up by such people as poor, single parents who just want to provide a life for their children. Such men are wicked in my eyes. You can now see how I struggle to "affirm their inherent worth and dignity as humans", or even see them as human for that matter. How can I forgive their transgressions against humanity? How can I forgive myself for not writing this letter sooner? I can only pray with all of what I am in this world, that what I write to you now, my one voice, can channel the anger in our hearts into a moral resistance to the wicked oppression of the men in power. We cannot let Bush achieve another presidency.
